Hydraulic test rig for a well-known automobile manufacturer.

Functional check of an engine pump unit in 4-quadrant operation.

With the highest demands on measurement accuracy and availability.

The initial contact also came about in this case via an existing customer who had already had a similar solution from us. The task was to build a test rig for measurement and functional testing of an engine pump unit for a well-known automobile manufacturer.

The particular challenge was in the high temperature range in which the measurements needed to be made. Up to 110 °C was the requirement in the specification. Furthermore, the test rig control and measurement data recording had to use Beckhoff control technology.

How we solved the problem:

The pressure and volume flow for the test rig comes from a digital radial piston pump with setpoint selection via SPC. A hydraulic special block with control valves and sensors provides the precise measurement data recording and test item supply. All pressure and volume flow regulation is ensured in 4-quadrant operation using Moog control valves with EtherCAT connection. This makes it easily possible to switch between the valve control types (pressure/volume flow).

Both the required supplier requirements and also the material releases by the customer were explicitly checked and implemented. The complete pre-commissioning with subsequent test run was undertaken with our customers at Knoll in Bindlach. The assembly, wiring and commissioning were carried out at the customer.

With the new test rig, our customer gains valuable information for decisions that supports it in the development of the test item for series production or in the development of new components.

The most important points about the project:

  • Implementation time: from May 2014 until March 2015.
  • Customer requirements: Functional check of an engine assembly unit in 4-quadrant operation.
  • Basic data: Volume flow: 40 l/min, System pressure: 200 bar, Max. operating temperature: 110 °C, Connection data: 3x400V AC / 50 Hz / 50 A.
  • Special features: Test temperatures up to 110 °C.
  • Advantages: Development of components based on clear, reliable test data.
